Hi everyone! I've been thinking a lot lately about the "Lunch and Learn" series that we have sorta-kinda started this year. The idea actually came from the Iowa Geographic Information Council by way of Matt Hoehn at Esri. We had great attendance at the first session on ArcGIS Field Maps and already have a lot of interest in the upcoming session on making the web accessible to people with disabilities.

If we were to continue this series, what ideas does the group have for topics/speakers? Here are some ideas that I've jotted down while brainstorming.

    • The GISP certification. Why get it, what's the process, how do you prepare for the exam, etc?
    • Tips for GPS data collection - how do you pick a good receiver based on your needs, what factors do you need to consider when planning a collection, etc? (Topic stolen from IGIC)
    • GIS careers in ______________ series. I was thinking this could be several sessions where we have people from different sectors serve on a panel and talk about what it takes to start a career in that area. We could do one on state/local government, one on private enterprise, one on academia, etc.
    • Strategies for finding the GIS data that you need. (Topic stolen from IGIC)
    • Essential software other than ArcGIS - beyond the Esri platform, what software do you use regularly at work and how could others benefit from it? Possible platforms: Power BI, QGIS, GIMP, Illustrator, Photoshop...
    • KAM's story - I recently learned that I don't have KAM's origin story straight. Maybe some of our most loyal members could have a panel discussion on how KAM came into existence and what needs it filled.

    Others....?

I really like these ideas. I especially think it would be fun to walk down memory lane and learn more about KAMs beginnings. I think a session on finding data would also be great!

I agree that these are all great ideas and I really like the idea of the Lunch and Learn.  Another topic I would like to see is how to access and use Census data for voter redistricting.  Are our commission districts still in line with the new census data that was released or do they need to be adjusted?

What about something IT related, too. Stuff like:

    • What is an IP address?
    • How does a firewall work?
    • Basics of LAN
